World Contraception Day 2026: Accurate Information Supports Reproductive Health

Every year on September 26, World Contraception Day is observed; it was first celebrated in 2007. The purpose of this day is to raise awareness about the importance of reproductive health, family planning, and access to accurate information about contraceptive methods. World Contraception Day promotes every person’s right to make informed decisions about their own reproductive health, including choosing an appropriate contraceptive method, planning a pregnancy, and determining the right time to have children. Access to information, counseling, and family planning services not only helps prevent unplanned pregnancies but also protects reproductive health, promotes personal autonomy, and enables people to make responsible decisions about their family’s future.

Why is accurate information important?

There are various methods of contraception, and the choice should not be based solely on the recommendations of others or on information found online. The patient’s age, medical history, any existing medical conditions, reproductive plans, and preferences can all influence the choice of a method. A gynecological consultation provides the opportunity for an individualized assessment and an open discussion about the available options. The doctor can explain how to use the method, its benefits, limitations, and possible side effects, so that the decision is an informed one tailored to each patient. World Contraception Day is also an opportunity to dispel myths about contraception and to encourage women to discuss fertility, family planning, and reproductive health openly.

Reproductive Health: A Current Priority in the Republic of Moldova

This issue is all the more relevant given that, on September 16, 2026, the Government of the Republic of Moldova approved the National Program on Sexual and Reproductive Health for 2026–2030. The program aims to reduce inequalities in access and improve the quality of sexual and reproductive health services, regardless of place of residence or socioeconomic status. According to the 2024 Generations and Gender Study, the demand for family planning met through modern contraceptive methods stands at 56.9% among married or cohabiting women. In urban areas, this figure reaches 61.2%, and in rural areas, 53.4%. These differences highlight how important access to services and accurate information in the field of reproductive health remain.

Gynecological Consultation—An Important Part of Reproductive Health Care

In this context, the IMSP Republican Medical Diagnostic Center offers obstetrics and gynecology consultations for the evaluation of female reproductive health, the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of gynecological conditions, as well as for monitoring women’s health at various stages of life. During the consultation, the specialist conducts a clinical evaluation, orders the necessary tests, and provides personalized recommendations regarding reproductive health, contraception, and family planning. The department also performs specialized gynecological procedures, including IUD removal and intrauterine contraception.

An informed decision starts with an honest discussion

World Contraception Day reminds us that reproductive health means access to information, responsibility, and the ability to make the right decisions for your own health. If you have questions about contraception, family planning, or reproductive health, talk to your gynecologist. A consultation with a specialist can help you choose the right solution for you, based on your health and your reproductive plans.
